Glossary

BAR

A unit of measurement for the pressure driving natural gas in the national transmission system. It is an atmospheric unit, and both terms 20 BAR and 20 atmospheres can be used.

Natural Gas

A primary energy source extracted from underground reservoirs, composed mostly of methane (CH4).

High/Low Flow Pressure

High flow pressure is above 16 BAR, and low flow pressure is up to 16 BAR.

Calorific Value

Defines the amount of energy (heat) that can be extracted from 1 kg of an energy source. The higher the calorific value, the more electricity can be generated from a unit of fuel weight.

Caloric Conversion Ratios

Input-to-output ratios. A term referring to the relative use of different energy sources to produce the required amount of heat and energy.

BTU

A unit of measurement for natural gas based on calorific value. For example, 1 million BTU is approximately 27.8 cubic meters of natural gas, equivalent to 26 liters of diesel, 23.7 kg of fuel oil, or 20.4 kg of LPG. The price of natural gas is measured per million BTUs.

PRMS Facility

A facility for pressure reduction and metering of natural gas (Pressure Reduction Metering Station).

Receiving Station

A station that serves as the entry point of natural gas into the national transmission system from the gas suppliers.

BCM

The standard unit for measuring gas quantities (volume) in billions of cubic meters.

Block Valve Station

A station used for the operation and control of the system and for isolating sections during emergencies.

SCADA

Remote command system for the flow of natural gas in the national transmission system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition).

DRP

Natural gas is a strategic asset for the State of Israel, and the operation of the national natural gas transmission system incorporates backup systems for emergency situations (Disaster Recovery Planning).
